Welcome to this new games journal! With the massive increase in games companies
and university games degrees, we felt that a new forum was needed to
disseminate recent research results and review current progress. This urgent
need was first put forward by around 60 participants who attended the
Computer Games workshop at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory UK in October
2000. Our first tentative step
was to organise an International Conference, GAME-ON 2000, at Imperial
College London in December 2001.
Since the only other Conferences devoted primarily to computer games
were in the USA and Japan, it made sense to choose London as the venue to
cover the European stage. GAME-ON,
organised with the assistance of SCS Europe BVBA, is now an annual event and
it attracts eminent speakers from around the globe. Participants were supportive
of the launch of this new journal. It seemed to us that a recurring theme in
their research work is the introduction of AI into game development and the
simulation of designs incorporating AI, so we have taken this as our theme
for IJIGS. A full list of
topics covered appears in this issue.
Although this is an academic journal, we hope that commercial games
developers or publishers will not be put off submitting, as we welcome
contributions linking academia with the commercial world. In order to
maintain a high standard for publication we have elected to send all papers
submitted for critical review. We have been fortunate in putting together a
distinguished Editorial Panel. Only papers satisfying their strict scrutiny
will be accepted for publication and in this way we hope to quickly establish
the reputation of IJIGS for high standards. In this inaugural issue, we have selected the papers
nominated by 3 reviewers for the Best Paper Award at GAME-ON 2001,
including the Best Paper itself (prize awarded by SCS) and the Best Student
Paper (prize awarded by Adobe Systems). In future issues we also expect to
include best papers from other conferences, such as the 3rd
International Conference on Computer Games, to be held in Albert Canada
later this year. We also hope
you will contact us with suggestions for Special Issues. This is your journal and we hope that
you will be encouraged to submit your technical papers, survey papers and
reviews for publication. Please
also let us have your feedback and help us to make this a journal that truly
meets you needs. Norman Gough and Qas Mehdi, University
of Wolverhampton UK 3
