Review: GAME-ON 2nd International Conference.on Intelligent Games & Simulation   Mike Allen

Game-On 2001 was held at the Holiday Inn, in London’s Docklands, over the two days 30th Nov/1st Dec. The conference facilities were excellent and the proceedings run in a brisk and professional manner.  A mixture of academic and industrial delegates attended and many took advantage of the location and stayed in the hotel. This provided plenty of opportunities to mix socially with the other conference members and to discuss new concepts and make new associations.

Notable presentations on Day 1 included Dr Richard Cant’s review of 3D accelerator technology; Dr Leon Rothkrantz’s discussion on a distributed approach to playing Stratego using agents, and an interesting demonstration from Fred Charles for interactive storytelling based on the TV series “Friends”. A special session was hosted by Adobe, which focussed on Adobe Atmosphere - 3D on-line virtual world construction software. This session was enthusiastically received and generated much discussion.

On Day 2 the keynote speech was given by Erol Gelenbe, University of Central Florida, on simulating autonomous agents using augmented reality.  Among the sessions that followed, Marc Cavazza from Teesside University gave a very graphic presentation on the implementation of an AI technique for use as a problem-solving mechanism within a virtual environment and Peter Spronck highlighted and developed the idea of producing games to run on Palm handheld computers (PDAs).

Full marks to the organisers for serving up a three-course lunch on both days rather than the plastic sandwiches and complicated coffee pots that usually accompany these events. A special thanks to Philippe Geril for his excellent organisation!  The London skyline provided a spectacular backdrop to the banquet on Friday night and discussions, carried on over dinner, were continued by many delegates in the bar afterwards. As with all good conferences I left with plenty of fresh ideas, many new friends and half an inch on my waistline! It thus disproved Woody Allen’s assertion that ‘all the good meetings are taken’.
