Gough

Normally pronounced to sound like "goff".  We would like to hear from anyone who pronounces it differently. It has been suggested that a "Squire Gough" in the UK once prononounced it like "goof".

The following poem was written by one of Tommy Gough's school friends in New Zealand:

         Tommy  G . O . U . G . H .

When first the new boy came to school,
        His name was not announced,
The children knew how it was spelled,
        But not how t’was pronounced.

‘Tis easy to decide quote one
Of course it rhymes with “rough”
I ’m positive in my own mind
That that boy’s name is “Gough”.

“You may be right” a second said,
        ‘Tis possible although
I rather think if he was asked,
He’d say his name was “Gough”.

“Pooh, Pooh” a loud voice called in scorn,
        With nonsense let’s be through,
That I am right you must allow
We’ll call the new boy “Gough”.

“That’s as you please”, replied a fourth,
        While swinging on a bough
And yet I see no reason why,
His name should not be “Gough”.

But when the boy himself appeared,
        And said with bashful cough,
Say, fellows can I play with you?
        My name is Tommy Gough.
With thanks to Simon Gough for sending this poem

Are there any Australian GOUGH researchers? I'm looking for descendants of James Gough born circa 1790, convicted of house breaking in London and sentenced at the Old Bailey to transportation for life to NSW. James arrived in NSW in 1813 on board the convict transport "Earl Spencer". I would love to hear from any others researching this line.

My Gough ancestor arrived in New Brunswick, Canada around 1800. His name was Joseph Phillip Gough (born in Old Plymouth, England 1789) son of Samuel and Mary Elizabeth Gough. I have fairly good information on the first - third generations of Joseph Phillip's descendants Canada and I am slowly completing to the present time. I wish to start expanding my search to look for ancestors of Joseph Phillip. The one piece of info I have on Samuel was that he was supposed to have been in the British Navy at the rank of Captain or above. My question to you is do you have any info on this and if not do you of whom I might contact to start getting the info relating to Samuel Gough.
Mike Russell (5th generation descendent of Joseph Phillip Gough)

Goffe
There is a lot of current interest in links to the regicide William Goffe.  Much data is available but some of it is  suspect. Please contact if you can shed any light on this.
