Dorothy Dell Goff (Jan 30 1914-1934), from Hattiesburg, Mississippi, came from a family that traces its origins as far back as the early settler William Goffe (1605-1660).  She was crowned Miss American and Miss Universe in 1930.  She went on to perform in the 1931 Zeigfeld Follies, and star in three movies for Paramount Studios in Hollywood.  The most known film is "Little Miss Marker" with Shirley Temple.  She was killed in an automobile accident in Pasedenda, California, and largely forgotten except by her friend Dorothy Lamour.  She is buried in Metairie Cemetery just outside New Orleans. For further details see Dorothy Dell,  The Last Ziegfeld Girl,  by Eve Golden.  Many thanks to her niece Barbara Dell Glass , of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for pointing this out. See  picture from newspaper clipping from New Orleans, Louisiana.
Eleanora Fagan Gough (Jan 30 1915? - 1959) - Better known as the jazz singer Billie Holiday , Eleanora was born in Baltimore in either 1912 or 1915. Her parents were in their early teens and her father (Clarence Holiday) left when she was a baby. Her mother (Sally Fagan) left the child with uncaring relatives and she was raped at the age of ten. Eleanora ran errands for a brothel in Philadelphia and in 1927 moved to New York, where for the next 3 years she earned a living as a prostitute before being discovered as a talented singer.
Francis Joseph Gough  Cricket.  Born: 26 July 1898, Sandgate, Queensland, Died: 30 January 1980, Sandgate, Queensland, Major Teams: Queensland. Batting Style: Right Hand Bat Bowling Style: Leg Break
Galen Gough (father of Alex Gough) the wrestler-strongman-artist-actor about whom a book was written four years ago by Greg Travis, a newspaper editor from Galen's home town, Benton Ky.
John Bartholomew Gough (1817-1876) - Born in Sandgate, Kent, England in 1817, emigrated to the United States when he was only twelve years old and became a famous religious orator. "Hillside," his mansion house, was built in 1848 in what is now called the "Morningdale" section of Boylston.
John D. N. Gough b. 1894. d. 1968. Stage and screen actor. Rose Hills Memorial Park, Whittier, California, USA Specific Interment Location: Garden of Rememberance.
William Goffe - regicide - signed the death warrant of King Charles I and fled to America on the restoration of Charles II.  See also the Judges' cave at New Haven where Goffe and fellow-escapee Whalley hid. Many claim descent from William but evidence is very difficult to find.  It is known that there were family connections in Ireland and probably the Lake District. One possibility in England is given by Peter Gough's excellent site on a Gough Family in Lancahire and Wetmorland.
William Venn Gough - UK architect and codesigner of the Granary building in a style known as Bristol Byzantine.
John Gough (b.1757) of Kendall - tutor to John Dalton.  See his Observation on Rubber Thermodynamics
John Goffe Rand   - invented the collapsible metal tube (tooth paste tube!)

Not only is he a gifted musician but as a live    performer he has the ability to create a rapport with his audience through his laid back, easy stage persona.  His style of jazz is similar to that of American west coast legend Chet Baker - laid back, ‘lazy’ vocals and vibrant energetic trumpet playing."

Paul Gough is Professor of Fine Arts, and Dean of the Bristol School of Art, Media and Design at the University of the West of England (UWE). He is director of the UWE Research Group ‘Place; Location; Context’ (plc). Variations on the Gough/Goff Name

Gawf
Sounds like a posh version of Gough but we can't be sure! See the Gawf Family Genealogy Forum.  Death Certificate of William W Gawf (1868-1956) of Eufaula, Oklahoma, son of John H Gawf. Letter to Edmond Gawf concerning death of Thomas W. Gawf. in the Civil War.  Home pages:  Jean Gawf;  GAWF also stands for the Great American Wrestling Federation! Jordan Gawf  would like to hear from other Gawfs - thinks the lineage may be German.  " There are lots of Gawf's in Oklahoma, and a few in Colorado and California."

Geaugh
Nothing known about the pronounciation or origins of this name.  Please contact me if you have any ideas.

Goch

Dr. Robert Goch
About Lauren Goch

Gochenour

Probably not related to Gough/Goff at all:  It is a variant of the Swiss-German Mennonite name Kochnauer. Several members of this family settled in Pennsylvania in the early 18th century.

Goffe

Fairly common version.

Goffé

French variant of Goffe?  See for example Bruno Goffé, Director of Research at CNRS, Paris. See also Le Goffe.

Gofs
Very little available on this.  See examples in USA . Please E-mail me if you have any idea about the origins of Gofs.
Gooch

Gooch Lineage

Goufe

Descendants of James Goufe - A Gough/Goughe/Goff/Goffe Family of Essex, England from around 1740.

Goz Links

Barry Goz

Le Goff
This surname is from little Brittany in France. In the Breton language it means "the smith", thus suggesting a Celtic link with the Welsh gof. (Thanks to Jean-Marie le Goff of the Université de Genève for pointing this out)
McGough

McGough site from Hugh McGough.  "New material includes "Where the Mountains of Mourne Sweep Down to the Sea - Ballymageogh and Slievemageogh in County Down" where the name Mhigh Eotach or Mac Eochy, predecessor to Mag Eochy or Mag Eochadha, predecessor to McGeogh, McGeough and McGough, is traced back to the second half of the twelfth century. There is some new material resulting from my recent trip to PRONI. Members of my immediate McGough family will be interested in the additions and corrections to "McGoughs and McGues in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 1856-1906." See also his Gough/Goff page.

MacGeoch, McGoughe, MacGough,  MacGoughie, MacGeoch, and MacGooch

Thought to be break-away Scottish clans, probably coming from Wales originally.  Not much known but some useful suggestions given by Frank Dixon Gough II

McGeough Links

Ann Harney   - includes information on McGeoughs from County Monaghan
McGeough genealogy   - link has gone dead.  Any information please?

van Gogh
Probably not related to Gough:  "There are various Van Gogh families in the Netherlands, at least two of them originating in The Hague (including both the famous painter's and my own ancestors). I believe these families derive their name from the German town of Gogh in the Dutch-German border area, not too far from Venlo and Nijmegen, although none of these families can be traced back to this town. The Van Gogh family name might therefore also have different origins. In my comment on the Genealogie Discussie page   I suggested that there could be a link with the nearby Roman-Catholic pilgrim town of Kevelaer, just across the border." Yntze van der Honing.
