Goughs of the Manor of Marsh and Whitton Manor (1431-1705)

The manor house at Marsh, not far from Montgomery, dates back to 1086. In 1431 it was held by John Gough, son of John ap Griffith and Joan's daughter Eleanor. John was dead by 1493 and was succeeded by his son Roger Gough, perhaps the same as Roger Gough who died c.1560. This moiety descended from father to son in the Gough family until 1705, the following being the lords: John c.1560 - 1576, Thomas 1576 - 1614, Thomas 1614 - 1629, Roger 1629 - 80, Thomas 1680 - 1702 and  Roger 1702-05.

The last was required to sell the manor under the terms of his father's will (Ibid. p.179) and conveyed it to Thomas Jenkins in 1705 .

In 1431 a third portion of Whitton manor was held by John ap Griffith, ancestor of the Gough family of the Marsh. This small estate can probably be identified with lands in Vennington held by John Gough of Marsh in 1619 .
