We kick off this new volume of IJIGS with excellent papers dealing with artificial intelligence, simulation and related topics in the field of computer games. This issue continues the policy of publishing in differing categories (full papers, reviews, students papers etc) and features successful work by young PhD researchers:

Congratulations to our authors,  Pieter Spronck (The Netherlands) and Jasper Juul (Denmark ) who scooped the new  Best Researcher Awards at the prestigious Imagina 2004 International Digital Entertainment & Interactive Content Festival in Monte Carlo on 4th February 2004 (see the News Page for a photo). Pieter Spronck is a regular contributor to our Game-On International Conference on Intelligent Games & Simulation and the paper included here won the Best Paper Award last November.  We also include the paper  by researcher Liliana Vega (France)  that was highly commended at  the Game-On 2003 Conference.

EUROSIS – the European Simulation Society, continues to grow in strength and currently organises several international conferences.  Now is the time for volunteers to come forward to help organise special sessions.

Unfortunately the  Network of Excellence in Digital Games just missed securing  EU funding this year but, on a more positive note, the Network continues to thrive with various events planned for this year, including a Summer School in France.

Please continue to send us your papers and comments.  We value your support. We know that by having each paper submitted rigorously reviewed by three eminent referees, we are building a reputation for quality, as evidenced by the papers in this issue.  We hope you will  spread the word about IJIGS and help to establish it as one of the top journals in the field.
